I came across a cool blog today called Inside Out Style Blog.

They posted an article titled Why Do We Hate Our Stomachs So Much?
Imogen talks about how it's normal for women's stomachs to have a curve to them. Even most of the thinnest girls don't have flat stomachs. She also talks about how models are airbrushed to look "perfect" for public consumption.

This is dangerous thinking. I wanted to share this article. I hope you will read it. Just like the author, I also hear a lot of women with normal beautiful tummies complain about them to me. I do my best to highlight what you love and hide what you don't. I think I do a good job of this, but I also want you to love your body - all of it. Every women I have ever photographed is beautiful.

Boudoir Session

This boudoir session was actually a little while ago. My lovely client kindly gave me permission to use her pictures. When I asked if she would sign a release she was very enthusiastic about saying yes. She said she wanted other women to see how great her pictures turned out even though she doesn't have a "perfect body". Those are her words, not mine. I think she is gorgeous and I know her husband would agree!

I thought I would share them in black and white for fun, except the last one because, well, I love pink.

I thought you might like to see these behind-the-scenes pin up pictures. I have been seeing these all over the internet but I believe this is the original source so go here to check it out:
Pinup Before and Afters

They titled it "The Original Photoshop". I laugh because you can tell there have been some obvious modifications to the original images. I noticed a lot of trimming of figures, change of hairstyles as well as changing the background.

I think it's interesting to see all they do to get the shot. Notice how in the 10th photo where she is swinging they have a light stand showing right behind the model. I believe that is the source of light shining down on the top of her head giving her the appearance that the light is coming from the sun since the painting looks as though she is outside.

Most of all I want everyone to notice that most pin up posters were a bit unrealistic. Enjoy:

The Average Cost of a Utah Wedding

Planning a wedding?

Looks like Utah is one of the least expensive places to get married. That news is great, even though it's unsurprising. Remember in the long run that all you need for a wedding is a bride, a groom and someone to officiate the marriage (oh yeah, and the legal stuff like the marriage license). All the rest is just for fun.

I have a daughter and I have been thinking that we should save for her wedding (which, hopefully, will take place in the far future). Working in the wedding industry I have really found that the two places I want to spend money is on food and photography. Feed your guests well, it is what they will remember and splurge on photography, it's what you will remember.

Well... actually you weren't missing much. But if you care for an update. I got an invite... finally. So yeah, I'll start pinning now. If you have a Pinterest account you should follow me, I will follow you back. I believe in symbiosis, I'm cool like that.

Preparing for Your Boudoir Session - Lingerie

In the next post about preparing for your boudoir photo session I wanted to write about lingerie.

You can find lots of ideas for what to bring by looking through my portfolio or at the bottom of the info page. You can also find articles about lingerie here on this blog.

There are endless ideas for lingerie and accessories and I won't go through them. There are a couple things you should bring though:

Panties - bring a couple in different colors so you will have plenty of options.
Sexy bra - choose one that flatters you and makes you feel great, this is one time you shouldn't worry about comfort.
Heels - a classic black pair of stillettos, strappy or peep toe, choose your favorite sexy pair to complete your lingerie outfit
Thigh highs - optional, if you like them, they can really add to the sex-appeal of any lingerie
Corset - this one is also optional, but oh-so-flattering and sexy on everyone.

Bring these items as part of your recommended amount of oufits for your shoot, or in addition so can create variation in your outfits.

Just a note on why I put a recommended number of outfits for each session - it's not to limit you or make it hard to choose, it's because that is the number I have found works best for the time and amount of pictures we will be taking. If you have another outfit you want to bring, do so, we will try and squeeze it in. Through experience I have found that focusing on variations in posing and expressions is far more important than trying to do a marathon of outfits where you are dashing to change, take a few frames, and then dashing back to change again. I want you to spend your energy in front of the camera getting quality images.

Prepare your lingerie by packing ahead of time everything you will need so you don't forget something (it happens all the time). Bring dresses or other items that will wrinkle on hangers if possible. Cut the tags off any sheer items and all bras (they have a tendency to slip out and tags are not sexy). Bring any jewelry and accessories you may want to use with you.

We start out boudoir sessions by laying out your lingerie in order of how we will do the shoot. Generally we start with the outfit you are the most comfortable with and move to the most risque. We take a look at what you have brought first for a couple of reasons. First it helps the makeup artist know what style and look you are going for as well as the colors the makeup should compliment. It also prepares me to know which backdrop we will be working with for each one, so while you are getting ready I will prep the scene and the lights.

Don't worry if you don't have a lot of lingerie, I love simplicity and some of my favorite shots are done in just panties or even just draping with a sheet. Fancy undies aren't required.

On the way to your shoot wear something comfortable that won't leave marks on your skin and a top that you can get off without ruining hair and makeup.

Preparing for Your Boudoir Session - Hair & Nails

The next thing I wanted to write about in my little series about prepping for your boudoir photos is hair and nails.

Hair:
I highly recommend having your hair (and makeup) professionally done by my artist. She knows what looks great on camera and how to give you a sexy boudoir look. If you will be having your hair styled in my studio come with it clean and dry. It's tempting, but try not to pull it back into a ponytail. Elastics leave mark in your hair.

Don't have your hair cut drastically different from what you are used to right before your shoot. However, a trim to freshen up your style is a good idea. This will help your hair look it's healthiest (healthy = sexy).
Freshening up your hair color is also a good idea. You don't want roots showing in your pictures. This is really hard to touch up digitally. Again, this isn't the time to try something new or drastically different, stick with what you know looks good on you.

If you are doing your hair yourself or having it done at your own salon remember that for pictures it generally looks good with a little more volume than normal. Curly, wavy and straight can all be sexy. Leaving it down and loose is usually prefered over formal up-dos. Remember that boudoir pictures are about a sexy bedroom look, not a fussy prom style. Take a look at Victoria's Secret catalogs for some inspiration.

Nails:
The best advice here is to just make sure they are neat with no chipping polish. Your hands and feet will show in the pictures so make sure your nails look nice. Getting a manicure and pedicure before your shoot will help you look great, but you can also do your nails yourself. Try to stick with neutral colors like pale pink, ivory, and even nude polishes look sexy. If you want a more dramatic look stick with a classic red that looks good with your skin tone. I don't recommend intricate designs or wild colors. Your hands aren't the focus of most of the shots and you don't want your nails distracting from the overall picture.

Remember not to stress out. There is not only one hairstyle or nail length/shape that is considered sexy. Choose what you like and what looks best on you. These pictures are all about celebrating you.

Preparing for Your Boudoir Session - Skin

I wanted to write a series about getting ready to have your boudoir photos taken. A lot of this advice is found elsewhere on my blog, website and in the client section of my website. However, I wanted to compile it all in one tidy place. Look forward to more posts about preparing for your boudoir session.

Starting with skin is logical since that is what you will be showing a lot of. Here are a few tips to help you look your best:

1. Sunscreen
I can't stress this enough. Slather it on every time you go out, even in the winter. The sun can do a lot of damage to your skin by aging it and drying it out. It is never too late to start. If your past includes lots of tanning and sunning yourself that's okay, just start now. Buy a daily face lotion with an SPF 15 or higher. Also get in the habit of applying an SPF containing body lotion as well. Your neck and chest are the most vulnerable to the aging effects of the sun followed by your hands and arms.

2. Tanning
If you feel like you MUST get a little color before your boudoir session (I don't recommend it) try going sunless since it's safer. Spray tans and self tanning lotions tend to look orange and fake under studio lighting so don't over do it. Try out the product weeks in advance so you know what to expect and how it will look on you. When you apply it again before your shoot I suggest doing it a week in advance so it will have time to fade into a natural color. Keep in mind that with editing and filters we can create a soft warm look to your photos, so don't worry if your skin in pale. Besides, natural-colored dewy skin is sexy, look in fashion magazines if you don't believe me.

3. Exfoliate
Scrub your skin with a good gentle exfoliating body wash. This will reveal beautiful glowing skin. It really does make a difference! Focus on your elbows, knees and heels where your skin tends to be dry and dull. Start this as soon as your book your session. If your skin appears a little red after exfoliating then do it the day before your session and not right before.

4. Moisturize
This is another thing to start doing the moment you book your session. Get in the habit of applying a light body lotion all over after your shower or bath. Again, remember to focus on your elbows, knees and heels. Your skin looks much younger when it's properly moisturized. Before your session you can apply a light lotion that absorbs well. Don't apply anything too greasy or shiny, it won't look nice in the pictures.
Moisturize from within as well by drinking plenty of water. Your skin does look better when you aren't dehydrated. Drinking water will also prevent your body from retaining water which will help you feel a little slimmer.

5. Waxing/Shaving
If you have waxed before without any problems then just do so a few days before your session to give any redness and swelling a chance to disappear. Otherwise stick with shaving and do so the day of. However, you know your skin the best. Do whatever you know will look good. Besides legs and underarms don't forget your bikini line. Also schedule an appointment (or do it yourself if you want to) to have your eyebrows shaped.

6. Face
If you are having professional makeup done at the studio arrive with your face clean and moisturized, ready for makeup. Don't worry about any breakouts, makeup and a little digital retouching will take care of that. However, a handful of times we have rescheduled shoots for cold sores.

Remember these are all just tips and ideas. Do what works best for you or what is recommended by a doctor or dermatologist. Remember that you DON'T need to stress about your session. This list wasn't created to make you worry about doing and not doing a bunch of complicated things. You are beautiful and your pictures will show that!

"Bikini Ready?" Who's Judging?

I saw this title for an article and had to read it. It has been a long time since I have owned my one-and-only bikini. I grew up in a conservative family (which, as I get older, I am thankful for) where bikinis weren't something I would have asked to wear. So when I was about 20 I bought my first and last bikini since after that I had a baby and I no longer have a "bikini body". In fact, I don't have what I would call a "swimsuit body" in general, lol. But that is beside the point.

Check this article out. I liked it. It talks about how getting "bikini ready" has turned into this phenomenon and about how learning to love your body is ultimately the best thing to do.

Panty Primer

Check out this Panty Primer. While there is a section of "romantic" styles of panties that would be great for boudoir photos, some of the other styles are really cute and would work as well. Remember for photos to pick what is most flattering on your body, which can be different than what looks the best under your jeans.

Making it Special

Years ago I was working at a bridal show at The Grand America hotel. Chocolate dipped strawberries must have been the "in" thing with brides that year. Several caterers were handing them out as samples.

My booth was next to Culinary Crafts. If you are familar with them at all, you know their presentation and beautiful food is really unmatched in Utah. I couldn't help but overhear one of the servers working at the booth talking to brides, telling them over and over to help themselves to a chocolate dipped strawberry, but that they must dip it in the lime sauce, because, afterall "without it, it's just a chocolate dipped strawberry".

I was amazed at how a simple lime sauce gave their catering business that little extra something. I was offered one and they were amazing. The sauce did make it stand out. It did make it better.
I have always remembered that little lesson. Standing out and being unique is as simple as offering something that no one else does. Making it extra special isn't hard.

I have always kept that in mind with my boudoir business. I want it to be special, to be personal, the best. At the time I started a dedicated boudoir studio there weren't as many options for women, but I knew that would change. I know more photographers are offering it, and that makes me happy, it helps get the word out that boudoir photographs are available and something that all women should do. It also keeps it competitive and fresh. For every photographer available there are different styles and personalities for you to choose from.

I am so happy my clients choose me. I really work hard to give them the whole experience. A photographer friend once commented that I really sell a fantasy. I think that's true in a sense. I want you to see your finished images, the way they will print, at your preview session. I don't want you to have to imagine what the edits will be and if you will like them. I want to offer premium hair and makeup services. I work with the best! I also want you to feel comfortable. We have a great time, there is no judging or pressure. We just work hard to give you a product and experience that you will cherish forever.

While a plain chocolate dipped strawberry is delicious, it is, afterall, just a chocolate dipped strawberry :)

Spring Special

What the Sneeches Teach Us

My daughter has been on a Dr. Seuss reading kick which has been brought on by her school making a big deal about his upcoming birthday.

Last night we were reading about the Star Bellied Sneeches. I love Seuss, there is usually always a moral message in all those funny words. If you aren't familiar with the story here is a quick synopsis (skip the next paragraph if you have read it recently):

There are two type of Sneeches, those with stars on their bellies and those without. The first think they are better than the latter. A schmoozy sales-guy, McBean, shows up with a contraption to add stars to bellies. Those without stars pay him to go through his machine. They then think they are equal to the other Sneeches, who proceed to pay McBean to remove their stars, ya know, cause they are so last season. Now the first want their stars off and so on and so on. McBean makes a fortune as they add and remove stars. When they are out of money he takes off and laughs that you can't teach a Sneech. But he was wrong, after he leaves they all realize that stars don't matter and they all decide to get along. The End.

While reading it with my six year old we talked about how the Sneeches are dumb because one group spent so much money to look like someone else instead of being happy with who they were and the other group taunted the first because they didn't look like them. And McBean took advantage of the situation and became rich selling an image.

I talked to her about how that is applicable to us as well. There will always be those flaunting their looks and insisting we must buy a magic product or name brand clothes to be as good as they are. However, it's a desperate race that no one wins except the McBean's out there selling us their products to turn us into something we aren't. We talked about how it's good to take care of yourself and there is nothing wrong with wanting to look our best and buying products to do that, but we shouldn't get caught in the race of trying to be better than others, or just like someone else.

Happy (late) V-Day

Aw, I missed posting a little Happy Valentine's Day message this year. I don't really even have a good excuse. I guess the day just slipped away too quickly.
So I guess I can say - I hope everyone had a wonderful Valentine's Day. I hope the girls giving boudoir pictures got the reactions they were hoping for (I'm sure they did)!

As for my Valentines day, I was thinking how it is funny how this day evolves over the years of your life, from signing your name on all the cards for your classmates and making sure that the boys don't get the "I Love You" candies from you (unless you are into subliminal messages, I was too shy for that), and then on to more romantic events like dinner and a movie and then to making it a family affair like decorating heart shaped cookies with your kids.
This year I cut my daughter's peanut butter and jelly sandwich into a heart shape and wrote her a little note for her lunch. Sentimental things like that mean a lot to her. She was delighted.
To my friends, who's baby had a heart transplant, the whole holiday involving hearts means so much more to them. I think it's sweet the way they make a big deal about it. It is a time to remember all they have been through and to be thankful for all their blessings. To them, hearts aren't just special, they are precious.

While many think it is a holiday created by card and candy companies (I wonder that too), I think it can be so much more. It is a day set aside to let those you love know it... although maybe we should be doing that more often than once a year.

I am loving the purple trend right now! Eggplant and plum shadows on eyes (especially brown eyes) are really pretty. Try using deep purple shades to create a very seductive smokey eye.
I am hearing from a lot of brides that they are choosing purple for their wedding colors too.
I love when a color I didn't care all that much for totally becomes re-invented and trendy, especially a totally wearable color like purple (the orange trend was cool... but not so wearable in the real world.)

I just returned home from a week long trip to Disneyland with my family. I absolutely adore the happiest place on earth. If you have a daughter you have to check out the Bibbity Bobbity Boutique. My little six year old was estatic about being transformed into a real princess. She had a ball picking out her princess gown and having her hair, nails and (age appropriate) makeup done. I think the whole glamorous aspect of having a photoshoot was lost on her though, since I am always hauling her down to the studio to take pictures of her first lost tooth, halloween costume, new haircuts and the like. She hates studio lights and probably wonders why I can't take a snapshot like a normal mommy. But anyway, we are glad to be home and I am happy to be back finishing up Christmas orders for all my boudoir clients.

An Early Happy Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is approaching so fast! Thankfully this year we aren't hosting (I am in charge of bringing a cheese tray, I can handle that) but with all of the photo shoots I am wrapping up and with our vacation looming I am not sure if I will get another chance to post a "Happy Thanksgiving" message. So I thought I would sit down and do it now.
I wanted to wish everyone, and especially my amazing boudoir clients, a happy Thanksgiving. I couldn't ask to work with more wonderful women. I really truly do love getting to know each of you. The opportunity I have to be in your life, if even for a brief time, is so great. You are all beautiful inside and out.

Boudoir: (pronounced "boo-dwar")While you would think everyone visiting this blog might know this term, I am amazed at how many girls come in for photos and tell me they learned about "boudoir photography" after searching for other terms like "sexy lingerie pictures" or "intimate photography". A boudoir traditionally described a lady's dressing room, in French. But, more recently it's come to define a type of sexy photography for women.

MUA: a makeup artist. Some, not all do hair as well so you might see "hair and MUA". Trust me, super talented hair and makeup artists are not exactly plentiful here in Utah. I might just be picky. I do work with the best though, trust me.

Post Processing: This is basically the processing of your images after the shoot. Once the images are taken I upload them onto a hard drive and a backup hard drive. I then "cull" through the images, or toss out any where you don't look your absolute best (blinks, etc) or where I may have made a mistake (it happens, we all take a blurry picture or two). Then I narrow them down to the best images and edit them, and get them ready for you to preview.

What is Digital Editing

Turnaround Times: Usually this refers to how long after your session it will take until your pictures are ready to be previewed or how long it will take for products (like albums) from the time they are ordered until they are in your hands. If you have a deadline you are trying to meet (like a birthday or a holiday) contact me and I can tell you when you need to do your session.

Model Release: This is permission to show your photographs in promotional material (like on a website, magazine ad, or on this blog). Your images will be kept private unless YOU want to share them. While many girls choose not to share their pictures (I respect that) I am thankful for the wonderful ladies that don't mind showing off what the finished images look like. It really helps knowing what to expect and what the finished images look like, not to mention getting to check out what other girls wear to their shoot.

Damask: I threw this one in here because it's a popular pattern right now and is seen a lot in boudoir photography. There are many variations but it will usually look somewhat like this:

I try and stay away from things that are too trendy and that will date your pictures in a few years, but it is a pretty classic pattern that I use in album design (and currently on my website). I find it a little too busy and distracting for actually shooting against, I want the focus to be on YOU. So even though my studio sets are always changing slightly you won't find a lot of crazy patterns or colors.

Holiday Schedule

If you want to give boudoir photos for Christmas you will need to plan ahead a little bit. It takes time to process your images and get products like albums and calendars designed and ordered.

This year my family will also be traveling around the time I am usually trying to get orders completed. So the deadlines will be a little different.

Your session will need to be done by the first week of November to get products back in time for Christmas.
When we book your session I will let you know the ordering deadlines for the products you are interested in. Albums take longer than calendars, prints and disks.

If you can't do your session by then or miss the deadline don't panic, Valentine's Day is right around the corner and boudoir pictures are the perfect romantic gift!

This boudoir shoot was super fun. She is giving her husband a calendar, which she picked up this week. The pinup girl calendars are 11x17, glossy and really beautiful. She chose to customize it with birthdays and their anniversary. He is going to be so surprised!

May flew by in a hurry, didn't it? Well it sure did seem to for me. Now that the weather has been nice (alright, maybe only here and there) we have been super busy with outdoor shoots. Last-minute High School Seniors are all done (Congrats class of 2010!), but we are still in the thick of Bridals and Weddings are just starting to really take off.
This is really just my long way of saying - I've been busy, sorry I've been MIA on my blog.
Don't hesitate to call or email though if you are interested in setting up a boudoir shoot. Remember that we need time to get them done and back for brides who are doing them for their wedding day!

I was thinking about a business seminar I attended awhile ago. The people running it wanted everyone to mingle and get to know each other. We were all women. They told us to pull a beauty product out of our purse and tell the woman across the table about it, as if we were recommending it to a friend. If you didn't have a beauty product you could use something else or make something up. It was wildly successful! Every woman uses some sort of beauty product even if it's Vaseline in a tube for your lips. I pulled out my favorite lip gloss du jour and the lady across from me introduced me to oil blotting sheets. I still remember the brand, Crabtree & Evelyn. She told me about how she gets shiny skin throughout the day (me too) and how you blot them on your face to absorb oil instead of caking on more powder. Brilliant!

For fun I'll tell you what I have in my purse today. Nothing fancy, just products I love and use every day.

Glow Baby Glow lip gloss in Pink Crush
Brand name: mark. (Avon's teen brand, go figure)
Why I love it: It's not sticky but super glossy looking. It has a sheer pretty pink color and slight minty scent (totally kissable). It's super moisturizing and I don't have to apply it every few minutes. Yay!

Body Lotion in Sweet Pea Forever
Brand name: Bath and Body Works
Why I love it: It has a feminine floral scent but with citrus mixed in so it doesn't smell like your grandma's perfume (florals are just that way sometimes).

Breath Mints in Spearmint
Brand name: BreathSavers (Hershey)
Why I love it: They are sugar free, taste really great (not overpowering or too strong) and they really do freshen your breath for a long time after the mint is gone. They claim for 3 hours, but by then I've popped in another one because they are so yummy. And yes, mints are beauty products!

This is brand new, I haven't even gone through all the pictures. Don't worry I have a signed model release, I won't show your pictures unless you say it's okay.

She brought her own fake eyelashes for a very dramatic look. I love it. I'll post more when I can.

The Price of Beauty

I couldn't find the original source, but it's swimming all over the blogosphere, Rihanna allegedly spends $840,000 a year on her looks. Wow.
While much of that is spent on a personal trainer and an on-call chef, part of it is the obvious hair, makeup, lotions and potions she must use.

I am going to apologize in advance for hopping on my soap box and also for my superfluous use of exclamation points :)

No wonder we are all losing the game of trying to compare ourselves to celebrities and models! I think we need a good healthy dose of perspective. It is their job to look beautiful and as perfect as possible (and they have the resources). Our jobs are different. We may be housewives, secretaries, moms, {photographers}, CEO's, babysitters, waitresses, whatever. And we are important and strong and beautiful too!

One of the ways to enter the recent boudoir shoot contest was just to send me an email stating why you wanted a photo shoot. While I made it clear the answer would not affect the random drawing I could tell a lot of thought was put into some of the entries. I read them all. Most were pretty short and simple. They talked about wanting to show their husbands they are still sexy, or about needing to do something indulgent for yourself. They were sweet, they were sincere and they really touched me. So thank you, I am glad everyone shared. More than ever, I love what I do.

While all the basics are the same, boudoir photos are a little different. First of all, you have more skin showing, so the retouching portion is a little more extensive. Boudoir images call for more of a magazine look so a few little special effects (like a little glow on the skin) are totally appropriate. But the editing still shouldn't look obvious and you should still look like yourself, although with a little help from a hair and makeup artist you will look like a glammed up you!

Alice in Wonderland

I saw Alice in Wonderland last night. It was pretty good, here is my unofficial, abbreviated, no-spoilers review:
I loved the imagery and the world that Tim Burton created. The costumes and makeup were pure eye candy.
However, Alice's character was either under-developed or just plain dull. I never gained empathy for her and could have cared less if the jabberwocky ate her!
So there you have it, my honest opinion.

And as an aside, I realized I no longer belong to the generation au courant. During the movie I was annoyed by several people using their Blackberries. I mean, come on, it's like driving down a deserted road at night and then being blinded by someone with their headlights at the brightest setting. It's distracting.
Then the moment the movie was over the whole place lit up with cell phones. That part was just mildly funny. Here I had arranged for a babysitter and turned off my phone to enjoy an evening out with my husband. No way was I going to turn on my phone to check emails. Oh well, I'm getting old.

Edgy Boudoir

The lovely and talented Deena Marie Manzanares contacted me awhile ago about shooting and after figuring out our busy schedules we finally were able to. We talked about doing an edgy theme, kinda anti-pinup to give her something fresh and new for her portfolio. I had visions of Emilie Autumn, kinda punktorian-esque, but still boudoir. Deena brought so many amazing outfits and accessories that as we were picking through them our theme totally changed... and I honestly have no idea what it was! But it was a blast!

All About Corsets

Corsets are probably one of the most popular lingerie items brought to boudoir photoshoots. There are a lot of different styles. My personal favorites are the halter top corsets and the underbust corsets.

The halter top corsets are perfectly flattering on anyone, but especially helpful for curvy girls. Strapless dresses and corsets can sometimes create unflattering skin folds right above the armpits in the front. Halter top corsets really help that.

Underbust corsets are very easy to fit since it is just your waist it is cinching around. They can be worn with other lingerie, over slips, with bra and panty sets and even over a white button up shirt.

The Anatomy of a Corset:

Lacing and Snaps:

Usually, but not always they will snap up in the front somehow and then lace up the back. If you purchase a corset online it may come in pieces. Check out the first video below to see how to lace your corset (hint: it's not like a tennis shoe).

Modesty Panel:

Some corsets will have a flap on the back under the lacing. This is called a modesty panel. You can put it under the lacing so no skin shows or just fold it inside. It depends on how revealing you want to be.

Boning:

High quality corsets will have flexible steel boning encased into the construction. They used to be made out of whale bones! The boning will run vertical and gives support.

How to lace a corset:

Which Color for Lingerie?

Sorry, this news is a touch late for Valentine's Day lingerie shopping, but it's good info regardless.

Apparently men prefer black lingerie while red comes in at last place! A poll was conducted by Dr. Beckmann. He found that about half the men polled preferred black.

Lucky for us black is easy to find, flattering and mixes and matches with different pieces effortlessly and is perfect for intimate photographs.

While these poll results are fun, remember that your own man will have his own taste in both style and colors of lingerie. And, to be honest, he probably will love you in ANY type of lingerie! So ultimately pick what you like and what you feel good in. Your confidence is the most important thing when surprising him with sexy boudoir pictures.

La Femme Boudoir

Check out this month's Marie Claire. There is a really beautiful editorial spread with Dutch model Doutzen Kroes modeling lingerie for Victoria's Secret. Of course the use of the word "boudoir" caught my attention.

I love the sheer black! It photographs so beautifully. Black (followed closely by white) is the color I see the most at my boudoir studio. That's perfectly okay with me, but don't forget to bring at least one colorful outfit. It will make your album or calendar POP!

Remember that you can also pair outerwear with your lingerie. Jackets, hats, scarfs or jeans can all look really good when added to a lingerie ensemble. You don't have to buy a whole new wardrobe to do a boudoir photo session, check what you have in your closet and add a couple key pieces.

Alright, I know the examples are from wedding albums. They are a very popular wedding album for us. However, they are the ultimate boudoir album too and the guys that are receiving these are LOVING them.

The albums shown here are a soft black leather, but there are several COLORS to choose from. You can choose a sexy red, demure pink or white or a rich chocolate brown! There are many more and even different types of leather.

Just like the photobooks these are flushmount albums. The seams are almost invisible!

This album includes a cameo picture on the front and embossing. This one is obviously our studio sample. You can choose a special message or just your name and date or just leave it blank and let the pictures do all the talking for you.

These albums are truly works of art and you have to hold them and flip through them to really appreciate how gorgeous these are.

Glitter Toes / Gel Nails

I promise I will have everyone's boudoir stuff done for Valentine's Day, but it was time for a little break last night. My sister and I hosted a Girl's Night to do glitter toes!
So I was going to go with a conservative light pink but my mom did fire engine red, so I copied her after I saw how amazing they looked. She called my dad and said "I'm coming home with sexy toes". That is SOOO not like my mom, we laughed at how cute she is. I don't think I have ever seen her toes painted...

We were up until midnight. A few people left (including my mom) before we broke out the cameras and showed off our new glitzy toes. My feet are the bottom feet in the top picture. The funny little toes to the right of mine are my daughters. She thought she was such a big girl getting her toes done. My sister's are lime green, although in the picture they look yellow.

I don't know if it's just winter and the lack of sunshine or if the smog makes it worse, but I know a lot of us are concerned about our skin not looking so radiant.

However, don't worry about doing boudoir pictures this time of year. With a combination of a few tricks your skin will look beautiful.
Preparation:
You don't need to do anything drastic or expensive to prepare for your shoot. Shave (or wax) like you normally would, use a gentle exfoliator and moisturizer. Try and use a rich cream (especially on rough spots like elbows and heels) the night before your shoot. The morning of your shoot smooth on some more lotion or cream. If you want to use lotion right before your shoot make sure it is lightweight and will absorb quickly so your skin isn't shiny or oily.

Now is not the best time to try spray tans or self-tanning treatments. You run the risk of having the results not come out how you imagined and it might turn out looking unnatural in your photos. HOWEVER, don't panic if you have a mishap. That is what Photoshop is for!

Lighting:
Studio lighting has A LOT to do with the appearance of skin. I will make sure to use the most flattering lighting possible so your skin looks smooth and sexy.

There are a lot of tricks when it comes to glamour lighting. A fellow photographer explained to me a long time ago how lighting can make a big difference. He used a golf ball as an example. He showed me how if you light the ball from the side you will see all the little pits on the ball's surface because they are thrown into shadow, but if you move the light straight on the shadows are gone and the ball looks smooth. Now, straight on lighting can also have the effect of adding pounds (YIKES). But don't worry, I use a balance of contour lighting on the side and a fill light straight on to make your skin look great and help you also look your slimmest (yeah it's almost magic).

Digital Editing:
Editing the image in photo editing software, like Photoshop, is the final step. It is super important to finish the image this way to create that professional magazine quality to your images (hey, all the Victoria's Secret models get a little editing, you should too). I can bump up the color a little to give your skin a nice healthy look and also blend away any flaws. I think it's important to not over-do it though. Your skin is supposed to have texture to it. You don't want to look plastic.

You will get to preview your edited images before you purchase them. So you will know exactly what the final product will be.

So don't panic about living in Utah and having pale winter skin, your boudoir photos will be super sexy!

With 2010 right around the corner I thought I would do a little research about what the experts think will be the big makeup trends for this coming year so I could share them here.

A few seconds in I realized that trends are just that - trends. They won't necessarily flatter you, they may look dated in time, etc. So! With that in mind, we still want to look current and hot, right?

So let me share a few of my favorite makeup looks for boudoir photography:

Eyes: Dramtic eye makeup is great for boudoir photography. Smokey eyes are really popular and the look really photographs well and is super sexy.

Lips: I have always been told to do either dramatic eyes or dramatic lips, not both. However, you can be a touch more bold for this type of photography than you would want to be for just every day wear. Most women are surprised at how well they can actually pull off red lipstick. It just all depends on the shade and application. You don't need harshly lined lips, think more of a cherry stained look, like what you get after eating a bright red popsicle.

Nude lips can also be really sexy, but you will want lots of shine. And don't be fooled, nude colored lips aren't bare, makeup artists will put a touch of lipstick in a neutral shade on and then gloss over that. This will give a nice even and full appearance.

Skin: Super matte skin and super glowy (i.e. shiny) skin don't photograph well. You want something in the middle. You want to look fresh and dewey, not overly made up. Great makeup artists will also do a touch of contouring which will look very natural in photographs.

Keep in mind that makeup for photography should be a little heavier than normal, especially with the studio lights that I use. They can wash you out a touch.

If you are doing a session that includes 2 makeup looks it's best to start with a more natural look and then change it up a little and do a really dramatic look. It's easier to apply darker colors over lighter colors. Doing two looks also gives you the opportunity to try something new with the second look and it will give you more of a variety of images to choose from.

If you are doing a mini-session you will need to come with your hair and makeup already done and ready to shoot. If you are doing your makeup yourself make sure to practice. Stop by a MAC counter in the mall (Denise at the Fashion Place Mall is the best! She is one of my favorite hair and makeup artists) and they can show you makeup that will look great on you and you can buy everything you need there. Make sure to bring your makeup along with you for touchups.

A Heart For Madison

12-04-09 Update: Madison has a new heart on the way. She will go into surgery today. Please keep her family in your prayers, after the surgery the journey won't end, it will just begin. And please also keep the family that donated the heart in your prayers too. The gift of a heart means another family lost their child.

12-08-09 Update: Madison's surgery went well. I didn't know a lot about heart transplants before this, but the more I learn the more I realize what a miracle it is. In a child a new heart will start beating the moment warm blood touches it. Madison's doctor said that a heart was made to do one thing - pump blood, and it knows what to do. I was able to visit Mark and Michelle in the hospital during the surgery. They were doing so well and were surrounded by family and friends.

Larry, one of Mark's friends, purchased Madison's tree from the Festival of Trees and set it up in their house. He wanted them to have it and his generosity has touched me so deeply!

Get well soon little Miss Madison, you are loved so much!

I spent yesterday at the Festival of Trees at the South Towne Expo Center helping to decorate a tree in honor of my dear friends Mark and Michelle's baby daughter, Madison, who is waiting for a heart transplant.

Madison is 17 months old. She has a twin brother, Cooper. She will have her heart transplant performed at Primary Children's Hospital which is where the proceeds from the Festival of Trees will go.

Everyone should take time to visit the Festival of Trees which starts tomorrow (Wednesday) night for the public. I am amazed at the amount of hours that are donated (not to mention monatary donations). I am so glad I got to be a part of it.

The tree is titled "A Heart For Madison" and yes, there is a tree under all the ornaments.

I love Teddy Bears. From the beginning I thought it would be cute to put bears in boxes under the tree. Don't you adore the pink lights? I have battle wounds from wiring them on.

I picked out this ornament which reads:

Love believes all, hopes all, endures all... Love never ends.

Mark and Michelle have a long road in front of them, but I have faith they will get through this. They are strong and wonderful parents and they can be secure in the knowledge that their family is forever and that the trials they face now are just for a short time. I hope they also know how much they are loved by their friends, family and coworkers!

I know this is so off topic... but I just had to celebrate a little on my blog for my soccer team.

Real Salt Lake won the championship last night in a game against the L.A. Galaxy (and David Beckham). It came down to penalty kicks which means I have no fingernails left!!! But we have the best goalie in the league, I knew Nick Rimando could do it! I've seen him block an amazing penalty kick live.

I have missed very few home games this season and our team may have had some ups ands downs but they totally deserved it.
The bottom picture is from the Eastern Conference Finals (the funky way soccer playoffs work put us in the Eastern Conference). Isn't this picture of Nicky saving a shot sweet? (The photographer in me totally appreciates a shot like this)

Boudoir Posing - Curves

Go ahead and judge me, I'll wait...

Anyway, this week they had Marissa Miller (you know, Victoria's Secret Angel and Supermodel) as a guest. She taught the girls about swimsuit posing.

She pointed out something that I have never thought of. Apparently with sexy poses women think side shots showing off curves are more sexy than straight on shots, which is what men tend to prefer.
For your boudoir shoot we will do a variety of poses, but remember when picking out what pictures to give your man he may just flip for those straight-on shots (good to know).

Convertible Dress!

I had heard about convertible dresses, but had never seen one in person until one was brought to a photoshoot the other day. Although I guess the idea could seem a little gimmicky the dress did not look that way at all. It made for very sexy and elegant pictures.
Victoria's Secret has a rouched version that is very flattering and quite affordable. Although the dress is tight and body conscious the rouching (scrunched gathers) don't highlight flaws like a smooth dress can.

Wedding Photo Booths

Girls, if you are getting married and thinking about having a photobooth at your wedding for your guests - do it! The last wedding I photographed did one and it was a huge hit. The guests loved it and the bride and groom now have an amazing book filled not only with well wishes and signatures but with pictures of their guests being sweet and funny and having a great time.

I was so impressed with All Events Photobooths. The attendant not only made sure that every guest got a copy of the pictures but was very diligent about making sure they put one in the book for the bride and groom (you know how guests might tend to get excited about their own pictures they forget to share with the couple). They supplied everything including a beautiful black book and tons of pages for the guests to write on. They don't limit the pictures so the bride can hop in the booth with her new husband and then with her parents and then be silly with all her bridesmaids (they even had props like fun hats and sunglasses).

I happened to see All Events Photobooths at a bridal show. We chatted for a second (he was so busy with a line of brides-to-be waiting to try out the booth) and I grabbed their info:

Everybody's Free (to Wear Sunscreen)

I just wanted to share that I love Fall. When the temperature drops it signals the need for less sunscreen...
Have you ever noticed that when you were little and growing up people were always telling you to do things for your health or to help you grow up? "Drink your milk to make your bones strong" and "Exercise to build strong muscles" and my favorite "Do your homework so you will grow up smart".
Now that I am an adult it seems we have to do (or not do) things to stop ourselves from aging. You know, like the fact that I finally broke down and bought an expensive eye cream for the wrinkles that can only be detected then my nose is touching the mirror, and the fact I now use whitening toothpaste and wear sunscreen religiously. Anyway, just some thoughts about growing up and then growing old.
But back to sunscreen. I don't consider myself a makeup expert (that's why I work with talented hair and makeup artists) and I am certainly NOT a fashion diva, but if I could give everyone one beauty tip it would be to wear sunscreen everyday. I have super fair skin, so I always have, but I have seen a lot of sun damaged skin in my photographic career and while it can be taken care of with a little digital editing your skin is worth the extra few minutes it takes to smooth on a little UV protection each morning.

(oh and so I can never be accused of being a plagerizer - the title of this blog is the title of a Baz Luhrman song)

I really love the message that is being sent by Glamour Magazine's editor, Cindy Leive. Below is my favorite part of the article. Although the whole thing is worth the read. She is talking about how moving forward they want to show more "realistic" women after receiving a lot of positive feedback about a picture in their magazine of a woman smiling, wearing nothing but a string bikini, and having an "unperfect" body. She starts out setting the record straight about how she is not saying one type of body is more desirable than another:

To be clear, I'm not on the "real women have curves" bandwagon here, arguing that only bodies like Lizzie's are "real"---and that slender women are all unreal waifs who should just eat a cheeseburger and get over themselves. Turning the tables so we can bash one type instead of another isn't the answer. Celebrating the fact that we're all born different is. Think about it: In real life, women of all shapes and sizes have crazy sex appeal and killer confidence. Why should our own pages look any different?
We'll do our best to live up to this standard in the future: shooting models who diverge in every way from the cookie-cutter norm. Is it a retreat from fantasy? Of course not: If we wanted unadulterated reality, we could just print everyone's driver's-license picture. But I happen to think that a fantasy every reader can have a piece of is the most powerful fantasy of all. Thank you for encouraging us to try to provide it, and for pointing the way forward here. Your words inspire me daily.

I just LOVE how she is encouraging women with every type of body, not just the "skinny" girls or the "curvy" girls. We are all beautiful!

I also like how she talks a little bit about fantasy. We all know that the fashion industry sells a "fantasy" and if they didn't we wouldn't be interested.

Are the boudoir images I take a little bit fantasy? Yes, I would say they are. They are images of you carefully crafted to show your best assets, but also your true beauty and confidence.

Cupcakes

I have to admit... I am not really a cupcake person. I don't really "get" the concept. I mean cupcakes are messy, wouldn't you rather have a plate and a fork? A slice of cake tastes the same right? Oh and I don't like vanilla either, or so I thought.

The Chocolate changed all that for me. Ange, from The Chocolate, brought in a sampler box of cupcakes to me and my coworkers. I opened the box and offered one to everyone, there were four flavors. I ended up with the last one, vanilla, sigh, oh well, that's what I get for being gracious. Then I tasted it. Seriously, the best dessert on the planet. So I have been talking about these cupcakes non stop for weeks. I even picked some up for my family at the farmer's Market at Thanksgiving Point.

For my birthday my friends ordered boxes of cupcakes from The Chocolate, all vanilla save a few yummy carmel and chocolate ones. And finally everyone could see what I was talking about!!!

It's unanimous, The Chocolate makes the best cupcakes on the planet!

So if you are looking for a really awesome dessert for your wedding try these delicious cupcakes. Try displaying them on a tall tiered cupcake tree from Diamond Rental or have them boxed up as favors for your guests to take home... or do both, and invite me!

I am on a roll posting pictures. And the good news is that I have more, so stay tuned.

This was from a boudoir shoot for a bride. She brought lots of lingerie and did two hair and makeup looks. We had so much fun.

She brought her wedding shoes. Bringing something special you will wear on your wedding or something of his really makes the pictures more personal.Posing trick: When laying on your tummy bring the knee on your front leg forward a bit. It is super flattering and creates gorgeous curves.

This is one of my all time favorite boudoir poses. It's way sexy and shows off your hair and eyes.

Close ups can add a lot of interest and variety to your album.

It's Our Anniversary!

It is my husband and my ten year anniversary today! Charlie pointed out today that I have been married exactly one third of my life. It is hard to believe.
We met in college and dated for quite awhile. We got married when I was only 20 years old. Looking back that seems so young.

In ten years we have really built a wonderful life. We started a business together shooting weddings. Although I love boudoir photography (which is my own business), I do love shooting weddings because I love to work with my husband (and I'll admit it, I have actually cried during ceremonies and have fallen more in love with my husband while watching other people get married).
We have a beautiful daughter. She is so much fun and full of energy. She is smart and energetic and we are so happy to have the opportunity to be her parents.
We are lucky enough to be able to own a house in West Jordan close to both of our families and all of the people and things we love.

I was going to find my wedding pictures and post some here, but I haven't had the time. I may try to do it soon if I get the chance. So I will leave you with some interesting (or not, you decide) facts about our wedding/engagement:

We got married the same day as Prince Edward and Sophie, Countess of Wessex.
We randomly picked a day on the calendar to get married.
I bought my dress at a trunk show for under $200, which was unplanned, but very exciting. My husband was there when I bought it (like I said, it was unplanned). I loved it.
My 14 year old sister was my maid of honor.
We briefly lost my 86 year old grandfather (who had traveled from Washington) before the reception. He fell asleep in the men's room.
I forgot about having a pretty pen for the guest book until the wedding day. One of my bridesmaids and I ran to the mall all dressed up (veil and all) to buy one at Hallmark.
Arby's has never tasted so good as when my new brother in law brought us some roast beef sandwhiches before our reception. I hadn't eaten much all day.
Our first dance was to a Shania Twain song (not my usual taste in music, but I liked the lyrics).
Someone let my little black dog out of the house during family pictures and he ran straight to my family, who were posed and ready for the photographer, and he laid right down next to us. He was included in the shots.
I still am in love with my husband!

Plus Size Boudoir Photography Tips

Here's a fact - None of us has the "perfect" body.

However, every woman is beautiful. I really believe that.
Almost everyone that books a session with me expresses some sort of concern. I hear everything from "I'm a little older than your normal client" to "I have a plus size body, is that okay?" and even "Do you shoot girls that don't look like models?". My answer is that my "normal" clients are, well... normal! Every woman deserves to feel confident and comfortable enough to book a boudoir session. We all come in different shapes and sizes, we all have different personalities and attitudes, and that is something to celebrate. The media force feeds us a one-size-fits-all idea of beauty and that is absolute nonsense!

Ok, now that I have said my piece I wanted to put together a little guide to Plus Size Sexiness...

1. Pick lingerie that flatters you
Really this tip is for everyone. Lingerie that fits and makes you look good can do wonders for your self esteem as well as for your figure.
Be honest with yourself about your flaws and your assets (this does not mean to be hard on yourself). Try on everything in a full length mirror. Look at all angles.
Fortunately plus sized lingerie is not hard to find.
There is a fabulous website called Hips and Curves that caters especially to girls with... hips and curves :)

Their website is laid out beautifully and they carry high quality shapeware and the typical lingerie you would expect as well as costumes and accessories.

My personal recommendations are to stay away from stretchy cottons. Pick lingerie that either has structure or that is silky and that will flow over your curves. Don't buy items that are too small! They will press into your skin and create unnecessary creases. If you want to wear thigh high stockings get the kind that DO NOT stay up by themselves, they squeeze your leg and cause bulges. This happens to even the thinnest girls because of where the top of the stockings hit! Get the type with wide lace and a garter belt. As a bonus, garter belts flatter everyone. Just make sure it's not too tight!
My personal faves are baby doll slips (these show off cleavage and have lots of coverage in the midsection), corsets (well made corsets with boning will create a gorgeous hourglass figure on anyone), push up bras (just because you don't need padding doesn't mean you don't need lift and shaping) and little black dresses (there are so many options, try one with an empire waist and a low neckline).

2. Pose to flatter
Posing (and lighting) can make all the difference. Poses that stretch and twist your body will help you look leaner. Not every pose will work for everyone. Sometimes we will try things that won't work. It's not a big deal, we'll try something else. Boudoir photography requires a lot of experimenting. There are a lot of tricks like turning so you aren't square to the camera and putting your weight on your back leg that really help a lot. Check out this blog post:

3. Be Confident
Nothing is more sexy than a confident woman! I can't stress this enough. Ask any guy, it's true. Insecurity is not sexy. Don't compare yourself to other women, that's counter-productive. Think about the things you like about yourself. Pamper yourself from time to time. You deserve it!

how you were more concerned with what was in each of our best interests, than
you were with your battery life, memory space, or personal time. I know you
photographed more outfits and poses than you have mapped out in your packages.
I want you to know how much I really appreciate it. My three best
friends may never have an opportunity to do this again and you made it really
special. I hope you keep me posted in everything that you continue to do
because I am your biggest fan and I will be back as well as recommend you to as
many people as I think might be interested. Thank you for everything.

P.S. - The girls of Enzio were fantastic. They
made us feel so beautiful by the fabulous art they worked on us plus the kind
things that they said. You have great taste!

Amber and her friends traveled quite a ways to come do boudoir sessions. We really had a great time, although we were all tired by the end. The girls rented a gorgeous vacation home (hotel rooms aren't my favorite) and they stayed two nights. The home was beautiful and I wanted to move right in.

I am working on the girls' pictures right now and I can't wait for them to see all of them!

I have a couple little items of business. First, it's spring (yay) which means my busy season is approaching. My super talented husband shoots weddings and I'm his lovely (lol) assistant/second photographer. I still have lots of days available to shoot, but let's book your session soon, especially if you are a bride and you need your pictures back by a particular date.

Second, I just wanted to let all my clients know that The Dressing Room (the password protected portion of my site) has a handful of new pictures up. I have had some fun sessions and unfortunately I have a hard time finding the time to update pictures (and my blog) as often as I should.

And finally, I wanted to finish off this post by sharing a couple images from a recent session. If you are trying to decide between the different boudoir sessions I offer, I highly recommend doing two hair and makeup "looks". It adds so much variety to your session and gives you more images to choose from and more time for another outfit change.

Remember, I only share images if I receive written permission from my wonderful clients. And on that note, I just have to say that I get the neatest opportunity of meeting and shooting the most amazing women. I have made so many friends. I have also been able to share in the excitement of wedding preparations, been inspired by women whose brave husbands are serving in our military, and heard stories of true love by women celebrating anniversaries of all lengths. Every woman I shoot is unique and doing pictures for all different reasons, and I am lucky enough to be a part of it all. So, thank you!

Hair Has a Shape?

Please forgive me if you already knew this, but I thought it was really super cool. I was reading a very elementary level human body encyclopedia with my daughter the other day and I learned something interesting about hair. I always kinda wondered why some people have straight hair and some people have curly hair. I knew it was hereditary, but that's it.

Well, it turns out that it is determined by the shape of the hair shaft! If your hair is straight (like mine, actually make that "stick straight") then the hair shafts are round. If your hair is wavy (like I WISH mine were naturally) then the hair shaft is oval shaped. And curly hair is flat, which makes sense; it reminds me of curling ribbon.
